BBC to introduce applications for mobile phones

Saturday February 20, 2010

The BBC has announced that it will introduce applications for its news and catch-up services for mobile phones.

Of particular interest to business users will be a BBC News application that will provide breaking stories including video and audio content. It will be available for the iPhone in April, with versions for other platforms released later in the year.

Other applications will be one for BBC Sport, which will include an audio feed for Radio 5 Live, and one for iPlayer, the broadcaster’s web-based catch-up service.

Erik Huggers, director of Future Media & Technology at the BBC, said: "We are putting technology to work to create greater public value."

The corporation’s entry into the applications market shows just how important they have become to consumer and business mobile users.

There are already a number of applications that can be useful for businesses, including one from Bloomberg that lets users keep track of the latest data from financial markets and currencies around the world.
