Review of Motorola's DEVOUR Android social-networking smartphone for Verizon

    Friday March 05, 2010

The Motorola DEVOUR's call quality and reception around New York City were good. I found myself making sure that the DEVOUR was charged fully before my own AT&T phone because it was more reliable and the conversations were much clearer. I didn't experience any static during my testing, and I also didn't run into any dropped calls, although sometimes the call quality sounded a bit hollow. For the most part, the phone reported a full four bars of service signal and volume levels were more than sufficient for talking outdoors on the streets of Manhattan.

The DEVOUR has a 1400mAh battery that Motorola claims is good for up to 6.5 hours of continuous talk time. I found this to be on a par with what I experienced during my testing. When I used the DEVOUR as my primary device throughout the day I was able to go from 8am until 10pm on a charge using it to surf the web, place my daily phone calls, access email, and listen to a few songs while riding in the back of a cab. If you tend to use your phone less, I don't see why a day and a half of battery life would be out of the question.

It's very easy to add contacts on the DEVOUR. I simply had to open my address book and click a "+" icon. What makes the DEVOUR stand out among some other smartphones is that it automatically pulls down your contacts from social networks like Facebook, Gmail, MySpace, and Twitter, and then integrates those contacts into your address book. You don't have to do anything but create a MOTOBLUR account and enter in your credentials; the rest happens seamlessly in the background. You can also add a lot of information for each contact, including instant messaging IDs, addresses, birthdays, and a custom ring tones. I especially liked that I could sort my contacts into favorites and other groups (I created one especially for college friends). I was also able to view the recent status updates of my contacts from the address book by clicking a "Status" tab, and your friend's most recent status and their profile picture are displayed when they call as well.
